Marsanne
Overview
Marsanne is the primary white grape of the Northern Rhone, responsible for the great white wines of Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Peray. It is almost always blended with Roussanne, though the proportions vary by appellation and producer. At Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, white Hermitage is typically 80-85% Marsanne and 15-20% Roussanne. Marsanne produces wines of weight, texture, and extraordinary longevity — the best white Hermitages can age 30+ years.
Key Regions
- Hermitage — the pinnacle; Marsanne-dominant whites from lieux-dits like Rocoules, Peleat, and Maison Blanche produce wines of wax, honey, almond, and smoke. Chave’s white Hermitage is the reference.
- Saint-Joseph — lighter, more accessible whites; still Marsanne-dominant in most cases.
- Saint-Peray — traditionally a sparkling wine appellation, now mostly still whites; Domaine Auguste Clape makes a fine example from 80% old-vine Marsanne / 20% Roussanne.
- Crozes-Hermitage — the broadest and most variable; ranges from simple to serious.
Style Notes
Marsanne is naturally low in acidity and high in extract, producing wines that are rich, round, and textured rather than crisp and mineral. In youth, Marsanne-based whites can seem broad and unfocused; they often go through a “dumb phase” between 3-6 years of age before re-emerging with extraordinary complexity: honeyed minerals, wax, almond, smoke, white flowers.
The contrast with Roussanne is key: Marsanne provides weight and longevity; Roussanne provides aromatics and acidity. Most Northern Rhone whites blend both, with Marsanne as the dominant partner.
In Saint-Peray, Marsanne produces a firmer, more mineral style that drinks well over 6-8 years — Clape’s version shows pear, apricot, hazelnut, and table wax.
