Pinot Meunier

Overview

Pinot Meunier is one of the three primary Champagne grapes, alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is the dominant variety in the Vallée de la Marne (particularly western communes such as Damery), where slightly cooler temperatures and heavier clay topsoils suit Meunier’s earlier budding and ripening relative to Pinot Noir. In the broader Champagne hierarchy, Meunier has historically been associated with approachability in youth and a distinctive floral, fruity character, though in the hands of skilled growers it can also contribute to genuinely long-lived wines.

Key Regions

  • Champagne — Vallée de la Marne is its heartland; villages such as Damery and surrounding western Marne communes; also widely planted across the Montagne de Reims

Style Notes

  • Traditionally considered the grape of “forward” Champagne — contributing early fruit, floral notes, and roundness in youth
  • In Fabrice Gass’s Alexandre Filaine wines, Meunier plays a supporting role (25% of both Cuvée Spéciale and DMY), contributing floral tones in the upper register; the dominant voice is Pinot Noir (45%) and Chardonnay (30%)
  • The Sensuum Vertigo vintage-dated wine contains only 15% Meunier, reflecting Fabrice’s preference for Pinot Noir structure in his most cellar-worthy bottling
  • Meunier is also traditionally vinified as a still red (Coteaux Champenois) in Marne Valley villages; Fabrice Gass makes a non-commercial Pinot Meunier rouge that Gilman calls “the finest still red wine I have ever tasted from Champagne” (2013; 94 pts)
  • Gilman notes that the Pinot Noir-dominant terroir of neighboring Cumières (warmer, “the Sunbasket of Champagne”) supports why Damery is considered Meunier territory — Meunier benefits from the slightly cooler microclimate

Synonyms

  • Meunier (common abbreviation in Champagne)
  • Schwarzriesling (Germany, where it is used primarily for still reds and rosés)
  • Plant Meunier
