Adegas Guímaro
Overview
Adegas Guímaro is Pedro Rodríguez’s estate in the Amandi sub-region of Ribeira Sacra. The estate produces a range of single-vineyard wines from ancient Roman-built terraces high above the Sil River. Pedro Rodríguez’s vineyard Finca Meixemán — over 80 years old — is described by Gilman as “one of Spain’s greatest red wines, year in and year out.” All single-vineyard wines are foot-trodden, include a high percentage of whole clusters, and are raised in old Burgundy barrels for close to one year before bottling.
Appellations
- Ribeira Sacra — Amandi sub-region; multiple ancient hillside vineyards over granite and slate
Key Wines
- Finca Meixemán — 80+ year-old vines; “one of Spain’s greatest red wines”; Gilman’s benchmark Ribeira Sacra single-vineyard
- Finca Capeliños — 106 year-old vines; lower slope near Sil River; granite + slate soils; ~50% whole clusters; barrel-fermented
- Finca A Ponte — above Finca Meixemán on slope; granite + slate; Mencía plus Sousón, Brancellao, Merenzao, Caiño Tinto
- Finca Pombeiras — nearly 80yo vines; top of ancient terraces above Sil River; old Burgundy barrels
- Camino Real — warmer, slightly riper profile; “brilliant drink” at 13.5% in 2020
Style Notes
Pedro Rodríguez’s wines are defined by beautiful fruit transparency and tangy Mencía structure. Cooler vintages (2021) produce wines with a “Burgundian palate presence” per Gilman. Warmer years (2020) yield a slightly broader, richer profile. The Finca Meixemán is the estate’s most profound and consistent wine. All single-vineyard bottlings demand significant cellaring (minimum 8–10 years from vintage).
