Domaine Didier Dagueneau
Overview
Domaine Didier Dagueneau is the legendary Pouilly-Fumé producer founded by the iconoclastic Didier Dagueneau, who died in 2008 in a paragliding accident. Dagueneau revolutionized white wine production in the Loire, pioneering low yields, barrel fermentation, and extreme attention to terroir for Sauvignon Blanc at a time when the Loire was regarded as a source of light, simple whites. The domaine is now run by his children. The two flagship wines — “Silex” (from pure silex/flint soils) and “Pur Sang” (from chalky limestone) — are among the world’s most sought-after dry white wines.
Note: In recent vintages, the Dagueneau family has apparently stopped listing “Pouilly-Fumé” on their labels, for reasons that Gilman reports are not publicly known. He continues to describe the wines under the Pouilly-Fumé appellation for clarity.
Appellations
- Pouilly-Fumé (Loire Valley)
Key Wines
- “Silex” — from pure flint/silex soils; slightly richer, more complex style; flagship white; can age 20+ years
- “Pur Sang” — from chalky limestone soils; mineral, racy, slightly lighter style than Silex; outstanding in cooler vintages
Style Notes
Dagueneau’s wines are the antithesis of commercial Sancerre/Pouilly-Fumé: barrel-fermented, very low yields, deliberately long-lived. “Silex” shows a distinctive flinty, smoky mineral character that is unique in the Loire. The domaine’s wines have demonstrated they can age 15–20+ years — extraordinary for Sauvignon Blanc. Cooler vintages (2014, 2010) tend to age better than warmer ones; the 2022 appears to be a shorter-lived example.
Tasting Notes (from VFTC #119)
- 2022 “Pur Sang”: 13.5%; rated 93. “Just a touch soft for such a young wine.” Best drunk over the next decade; seems unlikely to match the longevity of the 2014. Drinking window: 2025–2035.
- 2014 “Pur Sang”: 12.5%; rated 94. “At its apogee today.” Beautiful, complex, wide open. Drinking window: 2025–2040.
- 2014 “Silex”: 13%; rated 95. “First bottle of the 2014 Silex I have ever tasted and the wine was superb.” Stunning aromatic constellation, flinty and chalky soil tones, superb depth. Drinking window: 2025–2045+.
- 2010 “Silex”: 13%; rated 94. “In its plateau of peak drinkability and shows no signs of slowing down.” Drinking window: 2025–2035+.
