Fontaine-Gagnard
Overview
Chassagne estate producing grand cru (Bâtard-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet) and premier cru whites. One of the top addresses in Chassagne.
Appellations
Key Wines
- Bâtard-Montrachet (grand cru) — one of the estate’s flagships
- Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet (grand cru) — the smallest grand cru in Chassagne; very rare
- Chassagne-Montrachet premier crus — Caillerets, Morgeot, La Romanée, and others
Style Notes
Fontaine-Gagnard produces wines from some of Chassagne’s finest terroirs. The style is characterized by richness and substance — typical of Chassagne white Burgundy — with good structure for aging.
2023 Vintage Notes
Visited January 2025. Full range produced in the generous 2023 vintage. Grand crus (Bâtard and Criots) and the full premier cru range all produced. The 2023s showed outstanding depth and the vintage’s characteristic succulence.
2024 Vintage Notes (Burghound #102)
Celine Fontaine-Gagnard: red yields ~30 hl/ha; moderate sorting; potential alcohols averaged ~12%. Yields too low to declare all wines separately — for the first time since 2016, combined Clos St. Jean and Morgeot into a Chassagne 1er. “The reds remind me a bit like better versions of say 2007 or 2011.” Bottled August 2025 to February 2026.
2024 Scores (bottled):
- Volnay “Clos des Chênes” 1er: 91 — succulent, vibrant, larger-scaled; evident minerality; sneaky long
- Pommard “Rugiens” 1er (0.21 ha, young vines — 2023 was first vintage after replanting): 91 — wonderfully elegant, pure; “really very good, especially for such young vines”
- Chassagne-Montrachet “1er” (blend of Clos St. Jean and Morgeot): 90 — better volume and density; utterly delicious; stony
- Chassagne-Montrachet: 88 — pepper character; not especially concentrated
- Bourgogne: 87 — quality Bourgogne
- Bourgogne PTG: 86 — “fine summer sipper”
