Domaine François Raveneau
Overview
One of two Chablis benchmarks alongside Dauvissat. Raveneau produces small quantities of premier crus (Montée de Tonnerre, Forest, Butteaux, Vaillons) and grand crus (Blanchot, Valmur, les Clos). Wines are among the most sought-after in Burgundy.

2023 Vintage Notes (VFTC #115)
Visited January 20, 2025. All 2023s still in cask. Isabelle Raveneau content with style and quality but “does not feel that they will make particularly long-aging wines by the very high standards of the family domaine.” Harvest started September 14th (benefited from missing the tail end of the heat spike). Due to quality and quantity, a Chapelot bottling is produced separately (last one was 2018). Gilman compares the style to the beautiful 2000 vintage — earlier accessibility but also graceful aging. “Back in the day I drank a lot of the 2000 vintage Raveneau wines (prices were way different back then!).”
2023 Scores:
- Chablis “Clos”: 97 pts (2033–2080) — “bottomless depth at the core”; “all this magical wine needs is enough time in the cellar to blossom”
- Chablis “Valmur”: 96 pts (2033–2075) — more reserved than Blanchot; rock solid core
- Chablis “Blanchot”: 95+ pts (2032–2075) — “a great wine in the making”; utterly classic
- Chablis “Montee de Tonnerre”: 94+ pts (2030–2070+) — “stunning wine in the making”; outstanding backend lift
- Chablis “Chapelot”: 94+ pts (2028–2065) — “gorgeous”; separately bottled in generous vintages
- Chablis “Butteaux”: 94 pts (2030–2065+) — more reserved than others; racy for the vintage; “outstanding”
- Chablis “Foret”: 93 pts (2027–2060) — “fine juice”; drinks ahead of Montmains this year
- Chablis “Montmains”: 92+ pts (2028–2060) — a bit more reserved than Vaillons
- Chablis “Vaillons”: 92+ pts (2027–2060) — very elegant; complex, paraffin, anise
- Chablis: 91 pts (2025–2050+) — excellent backend lift
- Petit Chablis: 89+ pts (2025–2040+) — lovely backend mineral drive
2024 Vintage Notes
No Montmains in 2024 (hail). Very little Vaillons from Dauvissat. Gilman visits annually.
