Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg
Overview
Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg is one of Vosne-Romanée’s most celebrated estates, now run by sisters Marie-Christine and Marie-Andrée Mugneret (the “Mugneret ladies”), with the next generation (Marion and Lucie Mugneret) increasingly taking over. The domaine produces wines from Vosne-Romanée, Chambolle-Musigny, Nuits-St-Georges, and grand crus Échézeaux, Ruchottes-Chambertin, and Clos Vougeot. The style is refined and precise — more elegant than many Vosne estates, with exceptional soil transparency.
Appellations
- Vosne-Romanée (villages, “la Colombière” premier cru)
- Chambolle-Musigny (“les Feusselottes” premier cru)
- Nuits-St-Georges (various premier crus; “les Trois Climats” in 2024)
- Échézeaux (grand cru)
- Ruchottes-Chambertin (grand cru, in Gevrey-Chambertin)
- Clos Vougeot (grand cru)
Key Wines
- Ruchottes-Chambertin — more finesse-oriented than most Gevrey grand crus; 95 pts in 2024
- Clos Vougeot — elegant, precise expression; 95+ pts in 2024
- Échézeaux — restrained, soil-driven; 94+ pts in 2024
- Vosne-Romanée “la Colombière” — top premier cru; 91+ pts in 2024
Style Notes
The Mugneret style prioritizes elegance and transparency over power. Wines are typically raised in moderate new oak (50–60% for grand crus normally), but the 2024 reduced this to one-third due to the tiny volumes — Gilman notes the terroir benefited visibly from less oak. The Bourgogne rouge is consistently one of Burgundy’s finest.
2023 Vintage Notes (VFTC #115)
Visited January 17, 2025 with Marie-Christine Mugneret (hobbled by an injury). Harvest began September 14th — let mud dry out after the September 12th storm. Picked 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM only. Many wines racked and assembled in tank Nov/Dec; only La Colombiere and three grand crus still in cask. Grand crus raised in 60% new oak; premier crus 50%. “Generally all quite black fruity in personality — even the Chambolle Feusselottes.” All share gorgeous sappiness. Gilman notes the generational baton is passing to daughters Lucie and Marion. “A proper vin de garde vintage — even the Bourgogne Rouge is going to need time.”
2023 Scores:
- Clos Vougeot: 96 pts (2040–2100) — Musigny-like when young; “another outstanding example”
- Echezeaux: 95 pts (2040–2100) — stunning; sappy core of black fruit
- Ruchottes-Chambertin: 95 pts (2040–2100) — complex; sappy core; fine-grained tannins
- Chambolle “Feusselottes”: 94 pts (2037–2085) — black fruity this year; already velvety textural sense
- Nuits “Chaignots”: 93 pts (2037–2085) — superb depth; fine soil signature
- Nuits “Vignes Rondes”: 93 pts (2037–2085) — extremely elegant in its youth
- Vosne “la Colombiere”: 92 pts (2033–2075+) — 70-year-old vines; premier cru quality
- Nuits “au Bas de Combe” V.V.: 92 pts (2035–2075) — “clearly of premier cru quality”
- Vosne-Romanee: 91+ pts (2033–2070) — 25% new oak; representative blend of four climats
- Bourgogne “les Lutenieres”: 90 pts (2030–2050) — “long been one of the very finest in all of Burgundy”
2024 Vintage Notes
Yields down dramatically. Only ~1.5 barrels of Chaignots in Nuits; all Nuits premiers crus blended into “les Trois Climats” villages bottling (93 pts — “premier cru quality without a doubt”). Grand crus reduced to one-third new oak due to tiny volumes (usually 3 barrels). Marion Mugneret tasted with Gilman while expecting a child.
Key 2024 scores: Clos Vougeot 95+, Ruchottes-Chambertin 95, Échézeaux 94+, Chambolle “Feusselottes” 93, Nuits “Trois Climats” 93, Vosne “la Colombière” 91+, Vosne-Romanée 90, Bourgogne 89+.
2024 and 2023 Vintage Notes (Burghound #101)
Marie-Christine Mugneret taking retirement (will remain background presence). Domaine adding 1.4 ha in Nuits for 2026 (Aux Allots, Les Charmois, Les Damodes). On 2024: “there are certain vintages that you hope to only experience once in your career.” Average yield less than 10 hl/ha (Nuits vineyards at 6 hl/ha) — lowest in domaine history (founded 1933). Nuits vineyards so small that Bas de Combe, Chaignots, and Vignerondes combined into “Nuits Les Trois Climats.” Used no whole clusters; ~50% new barrels.
2024 Scores (barrel):
- Clos de Vougeot: (92-94) — .34 ha by Château in Montiotes Hautes; “lovely though…going to need extended keeping”; only 2 barrels
- Echézeaux: (91-94) — 1.24 ha in Rouges du Bas and Quartiers de Nuits; touch of warmth
- Ruchottes-Chambertin: (91-94) — .62 ha in Ruchottes Bas; “length really is breathtakingly good” but trace of asperity
- Nuits “Les Trois Climats”: (91-93) — 25% Bas de Combe, 25% Vignerondes, 50% Chaignots at 6 hl/ha
- Chambolle “Les Feusselottes” 1er: (89-92) — touch of asperity
- Vosne-Romanée “La Colombière”: (89-92) — ~80-year-old vines; “very fine Vosne villages”
- Vosne-Romanée: (89-91) — “Lovely”
- Bourgogne “La Lutenière”: (87-89) — “very good for its level”
2023 Scores (bottle):
- Clos de Vougeot: 93 — “on the riper side but it remains fresh and vibrant”
- Ruchottes-Chambertin: 92 — “promising but the warmth is enough to compromise the balance”
- Chambolle “Les Feusselottes” 1er: 91 — bitter pit fruit-inflected finish; needs mid-term aging
- Nuits “Les Chaignots” 1er: 91 — super-sleek, succulent
- Echézeaux: 91 — “seductive and suave”; edgy finish, touch of warmth
- Nuits “Les Vignes Rondes” 1er: 90 — “approachable young if desired”
- Vosne-Romanée “La Colombière”: 89 — slightly warm
- Vosne-Romanée: 88
- Nuits “Au Bas de Combe”: 88
- Bourgogne “La Lutenière”: 86
⚠️ Contradiction with VFTC: Gilman (VFTC #115) scored the 2023 Clos de Vougeot at 96, Echézeaux at 95, and Ruchottes at 95 — dramatically higher than Meadows’ bottled scores of 93, 91, and 92 respectively. This is a significant divergence suggesting the two critics view this domaine’s 2023s quite differently. Gilman found more complexity and precision; Meadows noted warmth and edge in several wines.
