Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat

Overview

Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is a benchmark Chambolle-Musigny estate now run by Charles van Canneyt, who took over in 2008. Van Canneyt, a Belgian, also purchased and revived the historic Domaine des Chézeaux in Gevrey in 2021. The domaine holds exceptional parcels across Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée, including Richebourg and Romanée-St-Vivant grand crus, and the superb Chambolle premier cru of Charmes. Under van Canneyt’s direction, quality has risen substantially and the domaine has become one of the most sought-after estates in this corridor of the Côte de Nuits.

Appellations

Key Wines

  • Richebourg grand cru — one of the domaine’s greatest jewels
  • Romanée-St-Vivant grand cru
  • Chambolle-Musigny “Les Charmes” (1er cru) — benchmark premier cru

Style Notes

Under Charles van Canneyt, the domaine has moved toward a more precise, terroir-focused style that emphasizes freshness and aromatic purity. The wines are not overtly powerful but show the kind of soil-driven complexity that defines great Côte de Nuits. Van Canneyt also manages Domaine des Chézeaux in Gevrey simultaneously.

2023 Vintage Notes (VFTC #115)

Visited January 15, 2025 (Charles heading to airport for Asia right after). Harvest began September 10th. Several bottlings just racked into tank the day before and couldn’t be tasted — limited to wines still in cask from Nuits Murgers upward. Quite black fruity in profile. Aromatics reminded Gilman of 1993 red Burgundies, but far more sappy. “A simply outstanding vintage for Domaine Hudelot-Noellat.” Charles also shared first 2023s from his new Domaine des Chezeaux.

2023 Scores:

  • Richebourg: 96+ pts (2040–2100) — “great wine in the making”; very black fruity; supremely elegant
  • Romanee-St-Vivant: 96+ pts (2030–2100) — a touch reductive; stunning transparency; sappy black fruit
  • Clos Vougeot: 94+ pts (2040–2100) — fine soil inflection
  • Malconsorts: 94 pts (2036–2085) — “great juice”; deep, sappy, exotic topnote of lavender
  • Nuits “les Murgers”: 93 pts (2037–2085) — only 4 casks (two-thirds of parcel replanted)
  • Vosne “les Beaumonts”: 93 pts (2037–2085) — black raspberries, smokiness
  • Vosne “les Suchots”: 93 pts (2036–2085) — picture-perfect terroir snapshot
