Domaine J. & J. Archambaud

Overview

A family domaine founded in 1946, now run by Jean-Philippe and Jean-Christophe Archambaud. The family’s Hautes-Côtes de Nuits “aux Defois” parcel was planted by their grandparents shortly after the domaine’s founding. They also produce a Vosne-Romanée “aux Réas” villages bottling and a Bourgogne “Terres Rouges.” Gilman (VFTC #114) was particularly impressed by the 2021 Vosne-Romanée “aux Réas” and 2022 Bourgogne “Terres Rouges.”

Appellations

  • Vosne-Romanée (villages “aux Réas”)
  • Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits “aux Defois”
  • Bourgogne “Terres Rouges”

Key Wines

  • Vosne-Romanée “aux Réas” — 2021: 91 pts; “outstanding bottle of Vosne AC”
  • Bourgogne “Terres Rouges” — 2022: 88 pts; Vosne spice character

Style Notes

Traditionally styled wines showing good soil transparency. The “aux Réas” vines are planted in the hills above Nuits-St-Georges; the Bourgogne “Terres Rouges” shows a notable Vosne-like spice character that hints at the domaine’s location. Wines are not rushed to market — the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits needs several years to soften.

2022 Vintage Notes (VFTC #114)

  • 2022 Bourgogne “Terres Rouges”: 88 pts (2028–2040) — “quite refined bouquet; Vosne spice in the upper register; good soil undertow; simply needs bottle age to blossom”
  • 2021 Bourgogne Hautes-Côtes de Nuits “aux Defois”: 89+ pts (2031–2055) — grandparents’ vines planted shortly after 1946 founding; “impressive; fine bottle once it sheds tannin”
  • 2021 Vosne-Romanée “aux Réas”: 91 pts (2034–2075) — “classic example of this throwback 2021 vintage; outstanding bottle of Vosne AC; only needs time in the cellar”
