Domaine Jean Manciat

Overview

Domaine Jean Manciat is a small, quality-focused estate in the Mâconnais, producing Mâcon-Charnay wines. Jean Manciat is distinguished by hand-harvesting all vineyards — “rare in the Mâconnais in that he harvests all of his vineyards by hand, rather than machine, which makes a huge difference in the ultimate quality of the resulting wines” (Gilman, VFTC #116). Wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and raised in stainless steel. The single vineyard “Franclieu” — made from 30–35yo argilo-calcaire vines — is more soil-defined and mineral than the regular bottling.

Appellations

  • Mâcon-Charnay (villages and “Franclieu” single vineyard)

Key Wines

  • Mâcon-Charnay “Franclieu” 2023 — 30–35yo vines; argilo-calcaire; native yeasts; stainless steel; 13.5%; 92+ pts; 2025–2040. “Outstanding Mâcon and more refined and soil-driven.”
  • Mâcon-Charnay 2023 — native yeasts; stainless steel; 14%; 91 pts; 2025–2035. “Fine juice!”

Style Notes

Hand-harvesting and indigenous yeasts are the foundation of the Manciat style. The wines are fermented entirely in stainless steel, preserving freshness and mineral expression. The “Franclieu” is more complex and age-worthy; the regular Mâcon-Charnay is more immediately generous.
