Style Notes
Simon Bize produces wines of remarkable freshness and elegance for the Savigny appellation. Patrick Bize’s legacy is a lighter, more elegant style than many Côte de Beaune producers. Now run by Chisa Bize (his widow) and their daughter.
2023 Vintage Notes (VFTC #115)
Visited mid-January 2025 with Chisa and Patrick Bize’s son Guillaume. Chardonnay harvest started August 31st, Corton-Charlemagne September 4th, reds September 5–16th. Whites assembled in tank from barrels late August but not yet bottled. All reds still in cask — further evidence of how leisurely the 2023 reds evolved. Savigny AC is 100% whole cluster. Also owns a parcel in Latricières-Chambertin.
Whites:
- Corton-Charlemagne: 95 pts (2030–2070) — “another brilliant white wine”; rock solid core, electric finish
- Savigny “aux Vergelesses” Blanc: 93 pts (2030–2055) — vines from 1936; stunning old vine depth
- Savigny-les-Beaune Blanc: 92 pts (2028–2045+) — vines from 1992, hitting their prime
- Bourgogne “la Perriere” Blanc: 91 pts (2027–2045) — “one of the best examples at this level”
- Bourgogne “les Champlains” Blanc: 90 pts (2025–2040)
Reds:
- Latricières-Chambertin: 95 pts (2038–2100) — “absolutely brilliant”; harvested Sept 11 just before storm
- Savigny “aux Vergelesses”: 94 pts (2038–2085) — vines from 1939/1949/1954; “stellar” old vines
- Les Marconnets: 92+ pts (2035–2085) — vines from 1973; classically black fruity
- Les Talmettes: 92+ pts (2033–2080) — lavender topnote; excellent
- Les Fournaux: 92+ pts (2035–2085) — vines from early 1960s
- Grands Liards: 92 pts (2035–2080) — properly structured, needs cellaring
- Savigny-les-Beaune: 90+ pts (2033–2075+) — old vines from 1965/1978
- Bourgogne Rouge “les Perrieres”: 89 pts (2027–2045)
2024 Vintage Notes (Burghound #102)
Meadows met with Chisa Bize’s son Hugo (winemaker Eric Pignal still recovering from a serious car accident but expected to make a full recovery). Hugo joined the domaine full-time in 2024. Yields only 15 hl/ha in red, ~20 hl/ha in white. Some pinot parcels so low they had to be combined into a Savigny “1er” cuvee. 100% whole clusters used for reds as always. Latricières not presented again. Meadows calls attention to the “excellent” Bourgogne “Les Perrières” as “even better than it usually is in 2024.”
2024 Scores (barrel):
- Savigny “Aux Vergelesses” 1er: (89-91) — more power, size and weight; more austere finale; needs cellaring
- Savigny “1er” (blend of Fourneaux, Marconnets, Talmettes): (89-91) — mineral-driven; compact, youthfully austere
- Savigny “Aux Grands Liards”: (88-91) — lilting, refined for Savigny villages; “a wine of finesse”
- Savigny-lès-Beaune (villages): (88-90) — floral, finer than Bourgogne
- Bourgogne “Les Perrières”: (87-89) — “surprisingly powerful for the appellation”; “one to strongly consider, particularly for value”
