Il Marroneto

Overview

Il Marroneto is a small, highly regarded Brunello di Montalcino estate, producing wines of exceptional purity and age-worthiness from Montalcino’s classic Sangiovese (Brunello clone). The estate produces a Normale and the prestige single-vineyard “Madonna delle Grazie.” VFTC #117 covers the 2020 vintage of both cuvées, assigning 94 points to each, with Gilman describing them as “beautifully perfumed” and “great bottles of Brunello in the making.”

Appellations

  • Brunello di Montalcino — Normale and single-vineyard “Madonna delle Grazie”
  • Rosso di Montalcino

Key Wines

  • Brunello di Montalcino “Madonna delle Grazie” — single vineyard; 2020: 15% octane but “shows absolutely beautiful purity”; 94 points; 2040–2085+; “carries its alcohol brilliantly”
  • Brunello di Montalcino Normale — 2020: 14.5%; 94 points; 2038–2085

Style Notes

Classical Brunello: Sangiovese macerated and aged in traditional botti. Both 2020 cuvées show Gilman’s characteristic emphasis on “gorgeous base of soil tones” and “violet” top notes. The 2020 vintage is a very warm (drought) year and the wines are riper than typical, but still balanced.
