Pierre Meurgey

Overview

Pierre Meurgey is a négociant based in Bligny-lès-Beaune who also produces old vine cuvées from the Mâconnais under the label Meurgey-Croses, specializing in Pouilly-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran, and Mâcon-Uchizy. His Mâconnais wines are notable for their genuinely old vines: the Viré-Clessé is made from 60–90yo vines; the Pouilly-Fuissé “Vieilles Vignes” from 65–100yo vines. Gilman visited him in January 2025 in Beaune.

Style Notes

The Meurgey-Croses old vine bottlings are serious wines for the price. Pierre barrel-ferments and raises the Pouilly-Fuissé and Viré-Clessé wines in demi-muids, using minimal new oak. The Pouilly-Fuissé “Vieilles Vignes” comes from the warmer village of Pouilly and is more generous; the “les Bouthières” 1er Cru from 75yo vines is his top wine and deserves 3–5 years of aging.
