Querciabella

Overview

Querciabella is one of the finest estates in Chianti Classico, based in Greve with vineyards also in Radda and Gaiole. Run as a fully biodynamic operation. The estate produces a complete range from Chianti Classico Normale through Riserva and Gran Selezione, plus the “Camartina” Super Tuscan (Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon) and the Batàr white (Pinot Bianco/Chardonnay blend). Gilman describes the Chianti Classico Normale as “probably one of the two or three finest Normale bottlings of Chianti produced in all of Tuscany today” and the 2020 Camartina as “a legendary wine in the making.” VFTC #117 covers three vintages of Chianti Classico and three of the Super Tuscan range.

Style Notes

Biodynamic farming. Chianti Classico range uses Sangiovese exclusively for the Normale and Riserva. The Gran Selezione (from Ruffoli, Greve) is the estate’s prestige single-vineyard red. The Camartina is one of Tuscany’s most age-worthy Super Tuscans — a long-lived, Bordeaux-inspired wine. The Batàr is a benchmark white from the region, aging 15–20+ years. Querciabella is a reference-point estate for the quality of the Chianti appellation.
