Rully
Overview
Rully is a dual-focus appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, producing both red Pinot Noir and white Chardonnay of good quality. It lies just south of Chagny at the northern end of the Côte Chalonnaise. Whites are the more distinctive wines, showing apple, citrus, and stony minerality with excellent freshness. Premier crus include “Montmorin” (Chartron), “les Thivaux” (Juillot), and “les Cailloux” (Boisson). The appellation is an excellent value proposition and wines age well for 8–12 years. Also a source for Crémant de Bourgogne.
Key Producers
- Domaine Jean Chartron — “Montmorin” (2023: 92 pts; 2019: still drinking nicely in 2025)
- Domaine Michel Juillot et Fils — “les Thivaux” (14yo vines; top of slope; 2023: 92 pts)
- Pierre Boisson — “les Cailloux” (2022: 91 pts; generous new oak)
- Maison Joseph Drouhin — 2023 Rully Blanc (92 pts; “excellent Rully!“)
Style Notes
Rully whites show wet stone minerality, apple, dried flowers, and bright acidity. The best premier crus (Montmorin, les Thivaux) reward 5–10 years of cellaring. Reds are lighter than Mercurey, fresh and cherry-driven.
Vintage Notes
- 2023: Fine vintage; Chartron “Montmorin” and Juillot “les Thivaux” both scored 92 pts. Drouhin Rully Blanc also 92 pts. “First class Rully” (Gilman on Drouhin).
- 2019: Chartron “Montmorin” showing complex maturing bouquet in January 2025; still drinking well; 90 pts.
