Grenache

Overview

Grenache is the dominant red grape of the Southern Rhone Valley and one of the most widely planted varieties in the world. Originally from Spain (as Garnacha), it thrives in hot, dry, windy climates where it produces wines of high alcohol, generous red fruit, and supple tannins. In Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache is the backbone of virtually all red blends and reaches its most profound expression. The cellar holds 71 bottles of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, where Grenache dominates. Chateau Rayas — the most legendary estate of the appellation — is 100% Grenache.

Key Regions

  • Chateauneuf-du-Pape — the pinnacle; old-vine Grenache on galets roules (rounded stones) produces wines of extraordinary warmth, complexity, and longevity. Chateau Rayas is the benchmark for 100% Grenache.
  • Gigondas, Vacqueyras — Southern Rhone crus where Grenache dominates blends alongside Mourvedre and Syrah.
  • Priorat (Spain) — as Garnacha; old-vine plantings on llicorella (slate) produce concentrated, mineral wines.
  • Sardinia (Italy) — as Cannonau; rustic, high-alcohol reds.
  • Roussillon (France) — old-vine Grenache for both dry reds and Vins Doux Naturels (Banyuls, Maury, Rivesaltes).

Style Notes

Grenache is naturally high in sugar (thus alcohol) and low in tannin and color. It oxidizes easily, which means winemaking must be careful — hence the traditional large foudre aging in Chateauneuf rather than small new oak. At its best, old-vine Grenache produces wines of haunting complexity: kirsch, garrigue herbs, lavender, spice, and a warmth that is generous without being heavy. Rayas demonstrates that 100% Grenache, from the right terroir and old enough vines, needs no blending partners.

In blends (the GSM model: Grenache-Syrah-Mourvedre), Grenache provides the fruit and generosity, Syrah adds color and structure, and Mourvedre contributes tannin and savory depth.
