Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet

Overview

Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet is the dominant producer in Fixin and one of the most rapidly rising names in the Côte de Nuits. The domaine was formed through the merger of the Berthaut family (Fixin specialists, est. 1950s) and Marie-Camille Gerbet, who came from a Vosne-Romanée family with parcels in Vosne, Chambolle, Échézeaux, and Vosne 1er cru. Together they represent an exceptional range spanning from Fixin village to Vosne-Romanée grand cru.

Style Notes

The merger of Berthaut’s Fixin expertise with Gerbet’s Vosne-Romanée parcels created an exceptional breadth of terroir coverage. The Fixin wines show the appellation’s characteristic structure and firmness, while the Vosne wines display the more refined, silky character of that village. Marie-Camille Gerbet runs the winemaking with precision.

2023 Vintage Notes

Visited January 2025. Full range produced in the generous 2023 vintage across all appellations. Fixin premier crus, Vosne premier crus, and the Échézeaux all produced. The large, healthy 2023 crop meant full quantities at every level — a welcome contrast to leaner vintages.

2024 Vintage Notes (Burghound #101, barrel)

Amélie Berthaut described 2024 as “nightmarish.” Lost Cazetiers and Clos de Chézeaux leases but purchased Lavaut St. Jacques (changes effective from 2022). On 2024: Hautes Côtes ~20 hl/ha (less mildew damage), some Côte de Nuits vineyards in single digits. Potential alcohols 12-12.5%, chaptalized very lightly. Generally lower whole clusters. Meadows was “very impressed by the quality I found here…the entire range is warmly recommended.”

2024 Scores (barrel):

  • Echézeaux: (92-94) — .20 ha in Les Treux, Quartiers de Nuits, Champs Traversin; 80% whole clusters; “very much built-to-age”
  • Clos de Vougeot: (91-94) — .31 ha; 50% whole cluster; “clearly built-to-age”
  • Gevrey “Lavaut St. Jacques” 1er: (91-94) — .13 ha; 100% whole cluster; “terrific and a highly promising wine”
  • Vosne-Romanée “Petits Monts” 1er: (91-93) — .50 ha; 50% whole cluster; “also very promising”
  • Fixin “Les Arvelets” 1er: (90-93) — 60% whole cluster; “terrific and unreservedly recommended”
  • Vosne-Romanée: (89-92) — “One to definitely consider”
  • Fixin “Les Crais”: (89-91)
  • Fixin “En Combe Roy”: (89-91) — 40% whole cluster; “a fine Fixin of finesse”
  • Fixin: 89 — “an excellent Fixin villages”
