Domaine de Vogüé

Overview

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is the historic anchor estate of Chambolle-Musigny, owning the largest share of the Musigny grand cru (approximately 7 of its 10.7 hectares). Run today by director François Millet (who has been the winemaker since 1986), the domaine has been in the de Vogüé family for over five centuries. The estate also holds significant parcels of Bonnes-Mares grand cru and the premier cru of Amoureuses. De Vogüé’s Musigny Vieilles Vignes is considered by many the definitive expression of Musigny, and one of the dozen or so greatest red wines in the world. The domaine also produces a small amount of Musigny Blanc, from Chardonnay vines planted in the grand cru.

Appellations

  • Chambolle-Musigny (Musigny VV grand cru, Bonnes-Mares, Amoureuses 1er cru, village)

Key Wines

  • Musigny Vieilles Vignes — the estate’s flagship; one of the most concentrated, complex, age-worthy red Burgundies produced
  • Bonnes-Mares grand cru
  • Chambolle-Musigny “Les Amoureuses” (1er cru)
  • Musigny Blanc — produced from Chardonnay in the Musigny grand cru; very rare; labeled as Bourgogne Blanc in young-vine periods

Style Notes

De Vogüé’s style combines power with extraordinary elegance — the Musigny VV is a wine of immense structure and aromatic complexity, but always retains the delicacy that characterizes great Chambolle. François Millet works with very low yields and extended aging in barrel. The wines are among the slowest to develop in all of Burgundy and can require 15–25+ years to fully open.

2023 Vintage Notes (VFTC #115)

Visited January 24, 2025. Chef de Cave Jean Lupatelli and team picked from September 6th, bringing in most crop before the September 12th storm. Everything racked in late December except Musigny VV (still in cask). Lovely mix of red and black fruit, polished balance, wines that will age very long. “Proper long-distance runners.” The Premier Cru bottling comes from 2007-planted vines in Grand Musigny.

2023 Scores:

  • Musigny “Vieilles Vignes”: 96 pts (2040–2100) — “superb bottle of Musigny”; still in barrel; sappy core, roses and peonies
  • Musigny Blanc: 95 pts (2031–2070) — two parcels (Grand Musigny and Petits Musigny); deep, vibrant
  • Bonnes-Mares: 94+ pts (2038–2100) — really showing well; mix of red and black fruit; terres rouges soil
  • Les Amoureuses: 94+ pts (2037–2090) — hunkered down after assemblage; “no doubt it will be outstanding”
  • Premier Cru: 93 pts (2035–2075) — 2007-planted vines starting to show age; expressive
  • Chambolle-Musigny: 91 pts (2033–2070) — sappy, transparent, good juice
