Chambolle-Musigny

Overview

Chambolle-Musigny is the most delicate and perfumed village of the Côte de Nuits. Where Gevrey is power, Chambolle is grace — the wines are pale in color, light in body, and ethereally perfumed with red cherry, rose petals, and violet. Beneath the fragility lies a spine of mineral precision and surprising aging potential. It contains two grand crus: the transcendent Musigny and the powerful Bonnes-Mares (shared with Morey-St-Denis).

Key Producers

Grand Crus

  • Musigny — the most feminine grand cru in Burgundy; perfume, silk, and extraordinary length. Dominated by Comte de Vogüé.
  • Bonnes-Mares — shared with Morey-St-Denis; more structured than Musigny; longer-lived.

Premier Crus

Les Amoureuses, Les Charmes, Les Sentiers (northernmost, at Morey border), Les Feusselottes (produced by Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg), Les Baudes, others.

Style Notes

The hallmark of great Chambolle is that its delicacy is deceptive — it ages beautifully precisely because the structure is all mineral and acid rather than tannin. The wines show red fruit (cherry, raspberry), rose, and violet aromas with a perfumed, haunting quality that is immediately recognizable. Les Amoureuses is the premier cru most often spoken of as grand cru equivalent.

Vintage Notes

  • 2023 (VFTC #115): Outstanding vintage. Mugnier Musigny at 97, Drouhin Amoureuses at 96, Vogue Musigny VV at 96, Barthod Fuees and Cras both at 95, Mugnier Bonnes-Mares at 95, Dujac Bonnes-Mares at 95. The corridor was fully productive (unlike 2024). Very pure, sappy fruit with classical Chambolle perfume. Both red and black fruity expressions found across producers. See also 2023 Burgundy Vintage.

  • 2024: Among the most rain-affected corridors in Burgundy — the Nuits-to-Chambolle stretch received heavy isolated rainfall that did not fall further north or south. Some vignerons reported 20+ mildew treatments (vs. 2–3 normal). Quality nonetheless excellent.
