Domaine Noël Verset

Overview

Domaine Noël Verset was one of the legendary artisan Cornas producers of the 20th century — a small, family estate making traditional, old-vine Syrah from granite hillsides in the appellation. Noël Verset has since retired; his nephew Franck Balthazar (see Franck Balthazar) acquired his old vine parcels when he retired, preserving the lineage of Verset’s historic vines (notably in the Chaillot lieu-dits, where the oldest vines date to WWI, and others that are 75+ years of age). Verset’s wines represent the apex of traditional Cornas and are extraordinarily rare today.

Appellations

Key Wines

  • Cornas — old vine; whole clusters; aged in old wood; no fining or filtration

Style Notes

Verset’s Cornas is recognized as some of the greatest Syrah ever produced. The wines are defined by their haunting minerality and complexity — a mix of red fruit, exotic meatiness, spice, and extraordinary mineral depth. The 1988 Verset is one of the highest-scoring wines in Gilman’s published notes. His vines are now in Balthazar’s care.

Tasting Notes (from VFTC #119)

  • 1988 Cornas: Rated 98. “May well be the single finest example of mature Cornas I have ever had the pleasure to drink.” Utterly brilliant at its “absolute zenith of maturity.” The 1988 “is even better than his 1985 and 1991 bottles, which have always been my reference point vintages.” Drinking window: 2025–2055.
