Jean-Michel Gérin
Overview
Jean-Michel Gérin runs a modern Côte-Rôtie domaine that has always leaned toward new oak, though from the late 2010s that started to halve — a good evolution. With sons Michael and Alexis taking more prominent roles, the house style is shifting toward greater immediate elegance and less obvious oaking. The best wines absorb the oak over time and are stylish, gaining a sense of place as they evolve. Based in Verenay, Ampuis.
Appellations
Key Wines
- Les Grandes Places — the top Côte-Rôtie, from 1920s, 1966, and 1985 Syrah on schist in the northern zone. 5-star in 2016 (STGT), 6-star in 2015, 5-star in 2019 and 2020. Captures the firm depth of its vineyard
- La Viallière — from young 2002-03 Syrah, raised in 500-litre casks (not 228-litre); captures the florality and snap of schist and mica-schist. JLL’s preferred wine of the 2021 vintage (5-star STGT)
- Côte Brune — from ~1 ha acquired from 2020 (ex-Barge family vineyards via Jean-Pierre Barge). The 2020 was a tremendous 6-star wine; the 2022 (including 7% Viognier) “suggested Burgundy, good Pinot, notably complex”
- Champin le Seigneur — the blended cuvée, incorporating harvest from Boucharey and Grand Taillis
- La Landonne
- Condrieu La Loye and Les Eguets (young 2009-11 vines, more intricate, very promising)
The Côte-Rôtie vineyards now total 13.5 hectares, expanded by 2 ha from 2020 with parcels previously worked by Domaine Gilles Barge / Julien Barge.
Style Notes
Modern but evolving. Initially defined by prominent new oak; the trend under the next generation is toward greater finesse and terroir expression. The top wines (Les Grandes Places, La Viallière) are capable of serious complexity and longevity. JLL rates this among the Côte-Rôtie estates that can produce 5-6 star wines regularly.
