Domaine Julien Barge
Overview
Domaine Julien Barge is the younger generation’s label from the Barge family of Ampuis, whose roots in Côte-Rôtie go back multiple generations (see also Domaine Gilles Barge, Julien’s father). Julien has added new cuvées including “Les Côtes” (a blended bottling from multiple lieux-dits: Côte Brune, Côte Blonde, Combard, Lancement, Baleyat, Boucharey), “Coeur de Combard” (single lieu-dit), “Côte Blonde” (inaugural 2013 from half-hectare of very old Sérine sourced from the Duplessy family since 1978), and “La Solaire” Condrieu. The wines balance classical Côte-Rôtie structure with modern precision.
Appellations
Key Wines
- “Les Côtes” — blended bottling from Côte Brune, Côte Blonde, Combard, Lancement, Baleyat, Boucharey
- “Coeur de Combard” — single lieu-dit; benchmark cuvée
- “Côte Blonde” — debut 2013; from half-hectare of very old Sérine (Duplessy parcel, farmed since 1978)
- “La Solaire” Condrieu — Viognier
Style Notes
Julien Barge’s wines maintain the classic proportions of Côte-Rôtie: mineral, soil-driven, long-lived. “Coeur de Combard” is consistently impressive and shows elegance alongside power. “Côte Blonde” offers more perfume and finesse, while “Les Côtes” provides the broad blended character of multiple terroirs. All demand extended cellaring.

Producer Profile (JLL / drinkRhone.com)
For decades the Barge domaine gave a prime example of traditional, whole-bunch fermentation Côte-Rôtie. Since Julien took over from father Gilles, he has converted to organic (officially from 2022) and pivoted the style toward elegance and earlier accessibility. The domaine’s Côte-Rôtie surface is now 5 hectares, down from ~7 ha after grandfather Pierre’s Côte Brune parcel was rented out to Jean-Michel Gérin (who is married to Gilles Barge’s sister).
Julien now makes two Côte-Rôties: Les Côtes (replacement for Du Plessy, first vintage 2017, 9,000-20,000 bottles) and Coeur de Combard (from 3 ha of the 5 ha total, southern sector on volcanic residues, 900-3,000 bottles). Coeur de Combard was stylish in 2019, silky in 2020, and complex/persistent in 2022.
Julien has lowered SO2 dosage in the whites and works with more detail in the vineyard and less cellar intervention. He keeps a flock of 12 sheep in the vineyards until spring vegetation starts, and employs a team of five for manual pick-axe soil work over four weeks in June around flowering. His Condrieu and Saint-Joseph contain good fruit and have gained freshness and better balance.
The historic wines under Gilles included Du Plessy (more aromatic), Côte Brune (good muscle and breeding, aged extremely well), and Le Combard (started 2007). The Côte Blonde, introduced in 2013, was excellent in 2013, 2015, and 2016 but is no longer issued.
