Marsannay

Overview

Marsannay is the northernmost appellation of the Côte de Nuits, lying just south of Dijon. It received full village AOC status in 1987 (previously only rosé was permitted). The village is famous for its rosé de Pinot Noir — considered one of France’s finest — but also makes increasingly respected reds and a small amount of white. Wines tend to be lighter and more accessible in style than the great Côte de Nuits villages further south.

Style Notes

Reds from Marsannay show red cherry, floral notes, and good freshness without the weight of Gevrey or Chambolle. The rosé is a benchmark for the style. Not a source of grand crus, but some single-vineyard lieux-dits show real character.
