Meursault
Overview
Meursault is the largest and most celebrated white wine village of the Cote de Beaune, producing some of the finest Chardonnay-based white Burgundy in the world. Unlike neighboring Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet, Meursault has no grand cru vineyards, but its best premier crus — Perrieres, Genevrieres, and Charmes — are widely regarded as grand cru quality. The wines are typically richer and more opulent than Puligny, with a signature nutty, buttery character layered over mineral depth.
Key Producers
- Domaine Coche-Dury — the benchmark Meursault producer; legendary Perrieres
- Domaine Arnaud Ente — tiny production, extraordinary precision
- Domaine des Comtes Lafon — biodynamic; Genevrieres and Charmes among the finest
- Domaine Roulot — crystalline, mineral Meursault style
- Domaine Bernard Millot
- Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey
- Henri Boillot
- Bouchard Pere et Fils
- Domaine Jacques Prieur
Sub-Appellations
Meursault has no grand crus but numerous premier crus of exceptional quality:
- Perrieres — the finest; rocky, mineral soils; often considered the “missing grand cru”; produces the most structured, age-worthy Meursault
- Genevrieres — rich, complex, hazelnut and citrus character; Dessus and Dessous parcels
- Charmes — the largest premier cru; generous, round, and approachable; seductive young
- Goutte d’Or — rich and golden; historically prized
- Poruzots — deep, earthy Meursault
- Boucheres — elegant and mineral
- Caillerets — bordering Puligny; more tensile and precise
Grape Varieties
- Chardonnay — overwhelmingly dominant; the soul of Meursault
- Small amounts of Pinot Noir are produced as Meursault rouge (relatively rare)
Style Notes
Classic Meursault is richer and more generous than Puligny-Montrachet, with notes of hazelnut, butter, almond, citrus blossom, and honeyed minerals. The best premier crus (especially Perrieres) combine this opulence with a mineral backbone that allows 15-30+ years of aging. Village-level Meursault can be excellent value and is often approachable within 3-5 years.
